i & i . . . inspiration and influences

I love the hunt for new and unusual things plus I have some pretty amazing friends who create equally amazing work ... all sorts of work.  Here you'll find some of my new discoveries and enduring inspirations.  Enjoy!

a few of my talented friends

Well, it's been ages since I posted any new finds here, but for me, this is a big one!  I was doing a Google search for a favorite documentary series from about 10 years ago, Signe Chanel.  Turns out there's now a whole fashion oriented streaming channel, M2M, and it has the series in HD!  It's like having my very own personal inspiration channel ... I'm about to bust!

video inspiration ...

"It's not a way of making a living, it's a way of making a life". This film is an intimate portrait of American artist Paulus Berensohn, dancer, potter, teacher, ecologist, philosopher and "fairy godfather' to many."

This little "making of" film is inspiring for several reasons . . . of course, it doesn't hurt that Greg Lauren is pretty darn cute!

I find it a curious thing that much inspiration borders on discomfort.  Michele Lamy and Rick Owens are classic examples.  The audaciousness of their art and life is breathtaking.

Back on much safer ground ... Paulus Berensohn has been an inspiration for over 30 years.  We met him in Penland, NC where he lives in the house behind our favorite potter, Nick Joerling.  Here's a longer excerpt from the film, To Spring From the Hand.  If you ever get a chance to see the full film ... do it!  Or better yet, buy it to watch on a regular basis.  Then for pure fun, Maira Kalman's TED talk

And just because it's one of my favorite things of all time and because it also needs to be watched on a regular basis ... Murmuration +  the music is excellent!

exploring old familiar mediums ...

Back in my pottery making heyday, you couldn't give away handbuilt pots.  And since that's pretty much all I did, I was totally disheartened and ultimately moved on to working in other mediums - namely jewelry.  Not so anymore ... thrilled at the variety and wide acceptance of these gorgeous and exquisitely organic forms.

A brand new discovery ... Sunshine Cobb.  She's handbuilding forms and using ready-made glazes ... a woman after my own heart!  Every last piece of her work is hugely inspiring.  Especially love the architectural references in many of her pots.

It's hard to overstate just how influential Cara May's knitwear has been on my work.  It was the purchase of a sweater very much like this one that inspired me to work with steel metal clay, leading to the development of my Urban Primitive series ... and on top of that, she's now a really good friend.

More sumptuous organic forms ...  Sabine Pagliarulo.  And I adore the color of this clay body ... hoping I can find something similar to work with.

And lastly, thought I'd share one of my vintage KVK pots circa 1994 ... a black clay, overfired - hence the bloating bubbles, which I really like.  These were made with hand thrown slabs.  Two freeform slabs standing next to each other, with a raffia wrap, giving the semblance of a functional form, but open on all sides.  I think the design has held up rather well!

Really just love the idea of Pragmata Gallery ...  a young Greek man, Petros Titonakis, curating the most exquisite collection of wabi-sabi objects and displaying said objects with undeniable magical grace.

And why are most of the really cool shoes made for men ... well, at least the ones I like ???????  These insanely gorgeous boots are from Swedish designer Richard Söderberg's brand Obscur.
