i & i . . . inspiration and influences
I love the hunt for new and unusual things plus I have some pretty amazing friends who create equally amazing work ... all sorts of work. Here you'll find some of my new discoveries and enduring inspirations. Enjoy!
a few of my talented friends
Well, it's been ages since I posted any new finds here, but for me, this is a big one! I was doing a Google search for a favorite documentary series from about 10 years ago, Signe Chanel. Turns out there's now a whole fashion oriented streaming channel, M2M, and it has the series in HD! It's like having my very own personal inspiration channel ... I'm about to bust!
video inspiration ...
I find it a curious thing that much inspiration borders on discomfort. Michele Lamy and Rick Owens are classic examples. The audaciousness of their art and life is breathtaking.
Back on much safer ground ... Paulus Berensohn has been an inspiration for over 30 years. We met him in Penland, NC where he lives in the house behind our favorite potter, Nick Joerling. Here's a longer excerpt from the film, To Spring From the Hand. If you ever get a chance to see the full film ... do it! Or better yet, buy it to watch on a regular basis. Then for pure fun, Maira Kalman's TED talk
And just because it's one of my favorite things of all time and because it also needs to be watched on a regular basis ... Murmuration + the music is excellent!
exploring old familiar mediums ...
Back in my pottery making heyday, you couldn't give away handbuilt pots. And since that's pretty much all I did, I was totally disheartened and ultimately moved on to working in other mediums - namely jewelry. Not so anymore ... thrilled at the variety and wide acceptance of these gorgeous and exquisitely organic forms.
"radar sightings" for 10 February 2015 . . .
This is from '08, but just as compelling several years later . . . Ma Ke at the Victoria & Albert Museum . . . stunning!
This Turkish designer's look books could keep me occupied for hours. Umit Unal ...
... and the regular styled looks are pretty terrific as well.
Words can't even begin to describe how much I love the jewelry of Rosa Maria ... really, just no words ...
